How my daughter ended up wearing my old curtains.

A real live Sound of Music moment meets desperately seeking mama. So I was trying to find some double layer gause to make this whimsical quilted bodice dress for my daughter. The problem is there is not much of a selection here as far a fabrics go, not saying that the selections we have are bad, you just can't find certain things in smaller cities. So with that being said, every place I went to told me to look online. I really wanted to stay local, because I am a big supporter of local business, but I knew if was going to get what I wanted I would have to probably search the internet.

I arrived at home feeling I had wasted a few hours running all over town, and then the thought hit me. I know I must have something laying around here that I could use. I dug through all my material finding nothing but the ordinary cottons I usually use. This had to be different, I wanted an old world look. Something you don't normally see. So I go to the linen closet/my husbands closet in the hall way, poor guy, and I find the perfect thing. A curtain I used a long time ago in a kitchen window. It was perfect! There it was the lone curtain , seemingly begging me to cut it up and use it for something else. So off I went with my curtain in hand and began to cut it up and stitch it onto some quilt batting that I had previously bought. The two married together perfectly and a day later I had a real live " A few of my favorite things" moment. My daugther loves the playful dress, and with the exception of the ceremonial first wash, you would think that they were stitched together.

I kept it old world looking by using safety pins instead of buttons and I left the bottom of both skirts unhemmed. What do you have in your closet that you could upcycle? Maybe it's an old sweater you know you will never wear again...make something out of it and if you don't then at least give it to a women's shelter and rid yourself of things you don't use.

I will be posting more pictures and info concerning the lil' women children's clothing line. For now I am just having fun posting random things. lil' women products should represent simplicity, easy to care for, and fun to wear. It's easy to care for because each product is handmade with the highest quality fabrics. You can toss them into the wash and hang dry or throw into the dryer. I like to run over my girls skirts with a warm iron just to freshen them up a bit. It's also fun to for the kids to wear because it's comfortable, easy on easy off. No fussy zippers and stuff to get hurt on while playing. Please understand I am new to all of this and I am still trying to figure out how this all works. Hopefully, in a few weeks I will be a super blogging mama. I thought this would be a good way to let everyone out there that is interested in the lil' women project to be able to keep up with what is going on, without having to email each individual person. I hope everything I put up here is relevant to you all and easy to understand. Let me know how I am doing from time to time. I would love your input. Take care, Kass

Denelis

I met Tom and Esther a couple of summers ago while I was on a mission trip with some dear friends of mine. Tom and Esther and their three children live on a remote Island off the mainland of Nicaragua called Isla de Ometepe. It is situated perfectly between two volcanoes both of which I believe are still active. There is also a beautiful fresh water lake that will absolutely take your breath away. I have never seen a more peaceful, clean body of water. While I was there we met the local pastor and his family. They welcomed us in with open arms and we sat on their front porch for the service. At that time there was no building for a worship service so the pastor was inviting people to his home and they were ministering there. It was so much fun. The singing, clapping, the smiles on everyone's faces. There I met Denelis, she had heard I had three little girls and so she made a sweet little dress and gave it to me. I have pictures of the girls wearing it. I will have to post them later. Denelis is now in sewing school in Cost Rica. This is the first time she has ever been away from home. It is a very exciting time for her, she is really stepping out and going for her dreams. I am so proud of her. Tom and Esther are like second parents to her and through them I found out about helping Denelis. lil' women is helping Denelis with her school right now. When you buy from lil' women or donate you are helping to change lives. This is the first story but I hope not the last. lil' women will continue to help other women achieve their goals. As we were on our way back from Alabama, we found this sweet little restaurant called the "Nickle & Dime Diner" an old boxcar turned into a fun little place to eat. Rubie decided to model her Little Bo Peep skirt and show off her waitressing skills. It was a nice break from the 16 hour drive (that turned into 20) and so much fun. While your eating you can enjoy watching people ride the ferris wheel and merry go round. We took our turn in it a couple of times as well. If your ever passing through Arkansas make sure to stop in a Ft. Smith and eat at the "Nickle & Dime Diner" and don't forget to order their famous homemade potato chips.

happy memorial day

In 1868 the first Decoration Day cermonies were held to honor the dead of the Union Army in the Civil War. Over time the observance was held for both sides and renamed Memorial day. We now remember all those that died in service to our beloved country. May we truely never forget.

The girls and I took a walk this morning to reflect on those that have fallen and to think about how grateful we are. If you have young children, I think it's important to give them a little history lesson on special days like this. Sometimes the purpose of special holidays get lost on the way to the lake or cookouts, I think it's great to spend time with friends and family and this is a perfect day for it, let's just not forget why we have this holiday.

mommy: gracie, lillie has a cold and she is not feeling well..she needs to rest, so let her alone for awhile.

gracie: mommy, if you have a cold does it mean that you are sick?

mommy: yes, dear it does. so let lillie rest for awhile.

gracie: so...mommy if you have a hot does it mean that you are well?

mommy: well, i guess so, sure...since hot is the opposite of cold.

gracie: so...mommy, am i hot, because i'm not sick?

This is just one of my favorite things...conversations with my girls. They are always making me laugh and think about things upside down. They inspire me daily and challenge me to think outside the box.
